Fall Forum 1999 Featured Speakers

Geoffrey Canada
A national expert on issues concerning violence, children, and community development, Mr. Canada's many efforts include the Harlem Children's Zone and Harlem Peacemaker's programs. He has dedicated his life to helping at-risk children and their families secure both educational and economic opportunities.

Linda Darling-Hammond
As the executive director of the National Commision on Teaching and America's Future, Ms. Darling-Hammond's work involves transforming educational policy in the 21rst century so that all children are guaranteed access to high quality teaching. Ms. Darling-Hammond, an education professor at Stanford, is the author of, The Right to Learn: A Blueprint for Creating Schools that Work.

Lisa Delpit
A nationally known speaker and author of Other People's Children: Cultural Conflict in the Classroom, Ms. Delpit was a recipient of a MacArthur Genius Award in 1990. Ms. Delpit describes her strongest focus as "...finding ways and means to best educate urban students, particularly African-American and other students of color." She is the founder of the Center for Urban Education Excellence at Georgia State University.

Amy Gerstein
Executive Director of CES. She provides overall leadership along with the CES Executive Board and the Congress in guiding CES into the next century. Amy manages the organization, develops the programmatic agenda, provides support to CES regional centers, supports the CES Congress, develops the research and professional development agenda, and represents CES in a variety of contexts.

Carl Glickman
Founder and Chair of the League of Professional Schools at the University of Georgia, a school renewal network promoting schools as democratic learning communities, Mr. Glickman has published several books on schools, education and democracy, the most recent being Revolutionizing America's Schools.

Deborah Meier
Vice Chair of CES, where she serves in an advisory capacity to the staff, Executive Board, and CES National Congress. Author of Power of Their Ideas, Deborah is founder and currently principal of the Mission Hill School in Roxbury, MA.

Lisbeth Schorr
Author and child advocate, Ms. Schorr is a leader in major national efforts to improve the lives of children in poverty. She is the Director of the Harvard University Project on Effective Interventions. Her most recent book is Common Purpose: Strengthening Families and Neighborhoods to Rebuild America.

Theodore R. Sizer
Founder and current chairman of CES . He is university Professor Emeritius at Brown University where he served as chair of the education department from 1984-1989. Three of his books, Horace's Compromise, Horace's School, and Horace's Hope, explore the motivation and ideas of the CES school reform effort. His new book, co-authored by Nancy Sizer, is titled, The Students Are Watching.
