National Exhibition Month 2009

This year's National Exhibition Month was a successful campaign, as throughout the month of May (in some cases in April and June), schools and support organizations across the country made their exhibition work public and advocated for the use of exhibitions in their local contexts.

Dozens of schools and organizations across 25 states participated, recognizing and documenting student exhibitions, submitting letters to the editor of local papers, hosting public events to showcase exhibitions, and educating media and local leaders about the benefits of exhibitions.

View a selected list of school exhibition summaries (some with photos), as well as an overall list of participating schools and activities across the country.

Media Attention

A number of schools and/or exhibitions appeared in local newspaper articles, education media and websites, and blogs. Among them were:

Arizona Daily Star, May 2000: So, City High student, you've earned promotion? Prove it. City High School students in Tucson conduct graduation and gateway exhibitions.

Take Part Blog, May 2009: May is National Exhibition Month! Blogger Melanie Smollin discusses the pros and cons of performance assessments over standardized tests in the classroom.

Five Freedoms Project Newsletter, May 2009: Performance Assessments and Student Exhibitions. This issue describes the benefits of authentic academic achievement.

Rochester Democrat & Chronicle, April 2009: 12th grade not routine for these busy students. Students at School Without Walls exhibit senior projects.

Please send us a report of your participation, along with photographs or any supporting materials, so that we can post a summary of activities on our website and in our newsletter, In Common. Send all correspondence to Ramon Calhoun, rcalhoun@essentialschools.org.
